Never buy a dog or a cat from a pet store or over the internet. Choose a responsible breeder with the parents on site for you to see. Educate yourself and your family about puppy mills at www.petshoppuppies.org.
Before adding a pet to your household, discuss the following "Responsible Pet Owner Responsibility List" with the entire family:
Making a lifetime commitment even if your lifestyle changes.
Placing on your pet a collar and ID tag with your name, address and phone number. (Ask your veterinarian about micro-chipping in case the collar is lost.)
Making sure your pet is licensed.
Getting your pet spayed or neutered.
Setting aside money for regular health care, including treatment for diseases and illness, grooming, checkups and vaccinations.
Providing shelter, a warm bed in an enclosed area, making sure all fencing and enclosures are secure.
Providing nutritious food and fresh (unfrozen) water every day.
Taking time and patience to train your pet.
Setting aside a time for daily exercise and play.
Supplying lots of love to your pet.
